Sankara Shanmugam is a Vice President in Stroz Friedberg’s New York office where he assists with the management of the firm’s technical operations in areas of computer forensics, electronic discovery, and incident handling. In addition to maintaining an active docket of cases and supervising forensic examiners, Mr. Shanmugam conducts digital forensic acquisitions and analyses of laptops, desktops, servers, phones, and tablets in civil litigations, criminal matters, internal investigations, and incident response efforts.
Mr. Shanmugam has served as the computer forensic expert for high profile matters that include a celebrity matrimonial matter that was front page news and a theft of intellectual property claim against a major animation studio for one of its most popular characters. Mr. Shanmugam’s forensic work and reporting in these matters played a crucial role in very favorable outcomes for his clients. Mr. Shanmugam has offered testimony in court as well as provided written testimony in the form of expert reports, affidavits and certifications in numerous cases.
In addition to matters in active litigation, Mr. Shanmugam has advised clients in pre-litigation stage both in terms of investigation and pursuit of digital evidence to form the basis of legal actions as well as evaluating and designing efficient workflows in preparation for large scale electronic discovery efforts. Mr. Shanmugam has also advised clients in settlement discussions to ensure proper protocols are undertaken for effective remediation and validation efforts to satisfy all parties’ requirements in a settlement.
Prior to joining Stroz Friedberg, Mr. Shanmugam was an Associate Director at Protiviti, Inc. where he served as the technical lead for the Computer Forensic and Incident Response practice. During his years at Protiviti, Inc. Mr. Shanmugam applied computer forensics in service of litigation cases, fraud investigations, electronic discovery and incident response matters for his clients.
Mr. Shanmugam is a Certified Computer Examiner (CCE), an EnCase Certified Examiner (EnCE), a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), a PCI Qualified Security Assessor (PCI-QSA) and a GIAC Network Forensics Analyst (GNFA).
